World Diabetes Day is approaching and I am getting ready for my project!
It's a fairly simple one.Now , my first task is to get in touch with the Ti Diams association.
It's a fairly simple one.Now , my first task is to get in touch with the Ti Diams association.
What's Ti Diams' ?
It's an association( I would rather say community) where children with Type 1 diabetes get support for their additional needs because of their diabetes.
hile reading their blog, I discovered that there were two conditions that can happen to you.
1. HYPOGLYCEMIA
a condition that occurs when your blood sugar (glucose) is too low.
Blood sugar below 70 mg/dL is considered low. Blood sugar at or below this level can harm you.
This can happen to anyone in general since it occurs when :
- Your body's sugar (glucose) is used up too quickly
- Glucose is released into the bloodstream too slowly
- Too much insulin is released into the bloodstreamFor More information: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001423/2. Hyperglycemiahigh blood glucose which is the condition that rises the most complicationsThis can happen due to :
- If you have type 1, you may not have given yourself enough insulin.
- If you have type 2, your body may have enough insulin, but it is not as effective as it should be.
- You ate more than planned or exercised less than planned.
- You have stress from an illness, such as a cold or flu.
- You have other stress, such as family conflicts or school or dating problems.
I especially find the last one interesting. The more I blog, the more I realise that there are extremely good sites on diabetes and I hope that by writing this blog.Even if the amount of detail isn't that great, the sources which I am displaying will give you a better idea of what diabetes is.

Sergey Ermakov
Sergey Ermakov has TYPE 1 DIABETES
As a result, his vision is blurred. This can result in blurring of vision which comes and goes over the day, depending on your blood sugar levels.
Despite that, he doesn't think that it affects his vision!
here is his evidence to justify his belief
that's him with a model
The dress looks very detailed

Reviving my sweet blog !
Hello there friends !
Yes I know I wasn't able to keep up with the blog, but hey ! we're all human after all !
I am now in my last year of IB and the level has stepped up ( what did I expect ? ).
Getting back to diabetes, while doing my Tok presentation,I cam across a speech of Th Prime Minister of MAURITIUS in 2008 who organized a seminar for cardiovascular diseases and he had stated that,Young Mauritians (such as myself) are catching more and more preventable diseases ( obesity, type 1 diabetes ) due to the rich nutrition which is now accessible to us.
Here are some of the Mauritian foods which I think might cause diabetes.
gateau coco ( coconut cake )
ladoo
Rasgulla
Napolitain
pancake
As you can see, Mauritian food is heavily influenced on other cultures.

I interestingly did my TOK presentation on "How can we determine whether coke is good or bad for our health ?". Despite not doing as well as I had expected, I amazingly enjoyed making the presentation and I think that the experience of making it was what I respected more than the grades.
Word of experience to students : Tok presentation will be one of the most challenging task which you will encounter throughout your diploma.

getting connected with diabetic communities
Hello guys J
Today I am going to reveal a few stats on diabetes which is really interesting because our generation ( certainly mine ) tend to place more faith in numbers rather than words.

The other great tool which can help you know more about
diabetes and connect with other diabetic is FACEBOOK >. The awesome

.
I am subscribed to the official diabetes channel which helps me see interesting comments about people and how they are able to cope with diabetes and how they are related to diabetes.

The people who speak on about diabetes show that exercising
is the best way to keep fit.
For my action, I think that the best target group to make them realize about sports is the younger years.Maybe at my school itself would be the most accessible.I would probably say class 6 and form 1 and 2.

That’s the daily diabetes website :

In the United States, more
than 24 million children and adults—nearly eight percent of the population—have
diabetes. In adults, type 2 diabetes accounts for about 90 to 95 percent of all
diagnosed cases of diabetes. [And type 2 is related with obesity].
Today , I read about a
women living in Australia who denies the Government for not doing enough about
informing people how sugar is bad for you. Interestingly, I am doing a TOK
presentation on how sugary drinks is bad for our health.
As I say again in
Mauritius, we are pretty good at informing the public about diabetes since we’re
on top of the list.
It’s difficult at times to accept that we have
to change our lifestyle since it’s how we’ve been brought up. My grandmother
had type 2 diabetes and that was because of her diet and she never did any
sport except from walking. She struggled a lot and my mother had to take care
of her daily needs with injections and controlling her blood glucose levels.
Due to that I am very conscious about what I eat. My dad is more acceptant about what he eats because he reads in the newspaper and magazine. In addition, my grand mother was illiterate.

Education is power
I think that peer to peer information is much more impactful
rather than talking to adults. Since some of those kids look up to the seniors
as their role models. Thus it’s really important to use the influence which we
have in a good manner.

Rachel McAdams gets her diabetes facts wrong !
Last weekend I watched "The Vow"- starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams. Its a great movie for those of you who enjoy romantic love stories. However , there's a part in the movie where the actress jokes about getting diabetes from eating too many sweets.
It spontaneously clicked to my mind that the scriptwriter got his facts wrong !
Diabetes does not directly come from eating too many sweets but obeisity does !
I am still thinking of the ways in which I can carry out a project. It would be wiser to target young, local children as they are the future generations of Mauritius
Nick Jonas - Jonas brothers has diabetes
- don't worry, being a diabetic isn't a crime !

By studying fat cells, like those shown here, researchers can better understand the mechanisms behind type 2 diabetes. (Image courtesy of the Sikder lab)
Diabetes results from a lack of insulin, a hormone that stimulates cells to take up glucose (a type of sugar) from the bloodstream. Cells need glucose as fuel to produce energy. Type 1 diabetics lack insulin because their immune systems destroy the pancreatic cells that produce it. Type 2 diabetics progress through two stages of the disease. In the first stage, called “insulin resistance”, cells no longer respond to insulin. The pancreas compensates for this resistance by producing more insulin. As insulin resistance persists, the pancreas cannot make enough insulin to keep up with the increased demand. The pancreas eventually shuts down insulin production altogether, resulting in type 2 diabetes.
Without sugar that can be converted to energy, cells starve and glucose levels build up in the blood, which can lead to life-threatening complications such as cardiovascular disease. Since fat interferes with the body’s ability to process insulin and overweight people are at increased risk for the disease, type 2 diabetes is sometimes called “obesity-related” diabetes. Type 2 diabetics are encouraged to carefully monitor their diet and exercise in order to prevent dangerous fluctuations in blood sugar levels.
From now on , I have decided that everyweek I shall post a celebrity who has diabetes on my blog !

Hey guys !
Hope you're well. So what's been going on in Mauritius recently about diabetes.Well, as a matter of fact The Rotary Club of Flacq hosted a campaign about the prevention of Diabetes in Youngsters on Saturday !
I have to say , I am extremely impressed by the amount of time and energy that the Rotary Club of Mauritius is putting.
However , they said that raising awareness is never enough ! which is genuinely true -
So today I am going to blog about , Diabetes Mellitus Type 2

- usually after childhood
- It's when target cells become insensitive to insulin
- Insulin injections are not needed
- Low carbohydrate diets usually control the condition

Diabetes Type 1
What is diabetes mellitus ?
It is the inefficient control of blood glucose where the concentration can rise or fall beyond the normal limits.
There are 2 types of conditions :
Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes
So, Today I thought about explaining to you what diabetes Type 1 is
Type 1 : usually happens during childhood
beta cells produce insufficient insulin. To control the glucose level , we then use injections.Ouch !
